In a landmark suit settlement June 4, 2008, the FDA reversed its previous position and recognized the serious health concerns posed by amalgam for developing children and fetuses, for pregnant women, and for individuals with mercury immuno-sensitivity or high mercury body burdens.
As part of the settlement, the FDA added the following notice to its website: "Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses."
